Foreword to the special issue of the Intelligent Systems for the Internet of Things (ISIT2017) 1 BACKGROUNDThe purpose of this special issue is to collate a selection of representative research articles that were primarily presented at the Intelligent Systems for the Internet of Things, held in Wuhan. This annual workshop brings together practitioners, researchers, vendors, and scholars from the complementary fields of IoT, in order to promote an exchange of ideas, discuss future collaborations, and develop new research directions. Many other technologies, such as data mining, big data analytics, statistical, and other analysis techniques, have also been used for exploring data generated from the IoT. In addition to analysis techniques, intelligent technologies, such as simulated annealing, tabu search, genetic algorithm, ant colony optimization, and particle swarm optimization, also provide many possibilities for the IoT because not only can they be used to enhance the performance of a system and its devices but they can also be used to make a system aware of events occurred. This special issue presents many examples of how researchers, scholars, vendors, and practitioners are collaborating to address high performance computing research challenges.
