Low background techniques in bolometers for double-beta decay search

Abstract: Bolometers are low temperature particle detectors with high energy resolution and detection efficiency. Some types of bolometric detectors are also able to perform an efficient particle identification. A wide variety of radiopure dielectric and diamagnetic materials makes the bolometric technique favorable for applications in astroparticle physics. In particular, thanks to their superior performance, bolometers play an important role in the world-wide efforts on searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Suc… Show more

“…The Li 2 100 MoO 4 crystals are supported with three PTFE elements on the top and bottom, while the LDs are clamped with three PTFE pieces. In Commissioning I, we did not install any reflecting foil around the crystals, because previous measurements demonstrated efficient particle identification performance despite a factor of 2 lower light collection efficiency [18]. Commissioning I was characterized by sub-optimal LD performance (see Sec.…”

“…Bolometers, the instruments chosen for CROSS, are among the most powerful nuclear detectors for the conduction of sensitive 0ν2β decay searches in the calorimetric approach [27]. They can provide high sensitive mass (via large detector arrays), high detection efficiency, high energy resolution and extremely low background thanks to potentially high material radiopurity and methods to reject parasitic events [28]. A Q-value as high as possible is desirable since this places the signal in a lower background region and increases strongly the decay probability.…”
