Purpose Ghana has recently reviewed its renewable energy Act 835 with an objective of providing 10% of its energy from renewables by 2020 (Ackah and Asomani, 2015). Meanwhile, solar Photovoltaic (PV) accounts for less than 2% of the energy mix (Energy Commission, 2018). In combating environmental issues such as climate change and meeting these policy targets, there is the urgent need to increase investment into the renewable sector. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to critically examine the impeding constraints to photovoltaic investment in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach The Literature evaluation was carried out of critical constraints surrounding PV investments. Questionnaire was developed and administered online using Google form. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the features of each constraint. In addition, inferential analysis using relative importance index was used to rank these indicators. Again, one sample t-test was used to test the significance of the indicator. Multiple indicators were used to measure the latent constructs. Finally, independent test of mean equity was used to test relationship between the working experiences of despondence who have worked with solar PV below five years and those who worked from five years to ten years. Findings The research has highlights high installation and maintenance costs, lack of access to long-term capital finance, access to affordable consumer finance and lack of support to research and development as the major investment obstacles to solar PV investment in Ghana. Research limitations/implications It is recommended that the Government of Ghana should provide incentives such as tax waivers, which will encourage entrepreneurs, invest into PV. In addition, it is recommended that solar PV companies must collaborate with financial institutions to provide low interest and flexible consumer financing schemed that can enable home users to purchase the technology. Future research should complement this work by focusing on the impact of domestic currency volatility on PV investment. The scope of this study is constrained to the PV industry in Ghana. Practical implications This study will serve as a guide to the private sector business owners to help make critical PV investment decisions. It has also brought to the forefront the reason why solar PV account for a small fraction of Ghana’s energy mix. Originality/value This paper seeks to espouse the prevailing constraints to PV investment in Ghana and seeks to contribute to already existing literature that will make profound changes in state policy around PV investment. By understanding these difficulties, driving pointers can be recognized to encourage effective future venture inside the sustainable power source area. In this way, the research leads to a better understanding of the impeding factors that hinders PV investment in Ghana. Again, the paper has achieved new discovery with regards to variations between years of experience with PV use. The variation being less than five years with over five years of PV use. By understanding these difficulties, driving pointers can be recognized to invigorate effective future ventures.

Performing their role as think tank and model of the world in environmental management, universities need a more inclusive and “whole-of-university” approach to environmental issues. Accordingly, this study adopted Participatory Action Research (PAR) design to the analysis Environmental Footprint (EF) factors on university campus using Multi-criteria Analysis (MCA) and System Dynamics (SD) Model. A group of 13 informants who are environmental experts on The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria campus were purposively selected to form an environmental assessment team for the study. Primary data were collected using environmental factors assessment form designed for the purpose after initial aggregation of contents from secondary sources. Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) revealed that energyprint (48.00 per cent) is the highest driver of environmental footprint followed by transportprint (30.20 per cent) and wasteprint (21.80 per cent) respectively while 'survival capability (best practices)' (40.70 per cent) was found to have the highest possibility of reducing it than any other inhibitors – legitimacy (environmental regulation) (34.60 per cent) and resource capability (societal practices) (24.70 per cent). To achieve a reduction in environmental footprint, scenario analyses based on Stock and Flow model of System Dynamics showed that the institution should annually combine Corporate Social Responsibility and University Rules and Regulations in proportions, 53.6 per cent and 46.4 per cent respectively. Thus, the study recommended the implementation institution-wide policy supported by awareness creation among stakeholders to foster both individual and institutional level commitments for reducing footprints.

It is imperative to develop an efficient strategic approach to Background managing the push-pull factor in economic development, particularly as relates to climate change and energy interactions in the West African Region. This article demonstrates the use of System Dynamics Modelling (SDM) for that purpose; to manage the development of energy growth with reduced impact in regards to climate change. The complexities of energy planning in relation to climate change necessitates the need for the tool to examine low carbon economy mixed with traditional approaches of planning.: Vensim DSS version 6.2 was used to develop the model. WAPP Methods member country level data elicited from WAPP and ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA) serves as the set of basic data used to develop and run the main model. These were complemented with other data elicited from various journal articles and internet sources. These include population and its average growth rate, GDP, per capita income, average per capita electricity demand, electricity generated, average electricity tariff, generation technology type, amongst others.: SDM demonstrates the capability to understand the theoretical Results frame for trade-offs between economic development and climate change, by handling the nonlinear relationship between generation adequacy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction for better targeted strategic regional intervention on climate change.: The primary goal of this paper was to demonstrate the use of Conclusion SDM to aid in resource planning in an inexpensive way to examine low carbon pathway. With the SDM, the goal of low carbon pathway in the energy system was achieved without the cost of controlled trials.
