Low-Cost GNSS Software Receiver Performance Assessment

Abstract: The Software-Defined Receiver (SDR) is a rapidly evolving technology which is a useful tool for researchers and allows users an extreme level customization. The main aim of this work is the assessment of the performance of the combination consisting of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems Software-Defined Receiver (GNSS-SDR), developed by CTTC (Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de la Catalunya), and a low-cost front-end. GNSS signals were acquired by a Nuand bladeRF x-40 front-end fed by the TOPCON PG-… Show more

“…But, due to certain budget limit, surveyor may choose low-cost equipment. Based on previous research, it tested one type low-cost GNSS receivers' performance and concludes that low cost receiver can provide good performance as the survey grade receiver, and that their practical application was feasible and reliable [1] [2] [14] and [15]. Since this study is conducted in Malaysia, the brands that is used regularly in survey work or for education purposes are Trimble, Topcon, CHCNAV, Leica, South and others.…”

“…Moreover, many devices lately are compatible with the European GNSS system, Galileo, which is currently (March 2020) in its full operational capability (FOC) phase: 22 FOC satellites were launched up to the end of 2019, in addition to the four IOVs launched between 2011 and 2012. However, of these 26 satellites only 19 FOCs and three IOVs are declared usable, as the other four had problems during their life in orbit [40][41][42][43][44][45][46]. The Galileo navigation signals are transmitted in the four frequency bands, depicted in Figure 3 below.…”

“…GPS plays a critical role in economic, infrastructure, social development, national defense, and security [1], providing continuous positioning and timing services for various applications, including civilian and military use. To ensure successful navigation and positioning, the acquisition and tracking modules are essential for software receivers, requiring a rough estimation of carrier frequency and code phase [2].…”
