Low‐cost polysulfone/polystyrene ultrafiltration membrane with efficient azoic dyes removal and excellent antifouling performance for colored wastewater

Abstract: A new low-cost composite ultrafiltration membrane made of polysulfone (PSf) and polystyrene (PS) blend was effectively achieved on the ceramic pozzolan support using dip-coating method. The effect of PS content (5-20 wt%) on membrane properties such as microstructure and filtration performances was investigated. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential scanning calorimetry analyses confirm that the two polymers lead to physical blend. The morphology analysis sho… Show more

“…A single peak at δ = 1.68 ppm (A) is associated with methyl groups. The peaks at 6.91–6.94 (B) and 6.97–7–00 ppm (C) are due to the protons closer to the C–O groups, that at 7.21–7.24 ppm (D) to protons closer to the methyl groups, and that at 7.81–7.84 ppm (E) to protons close to the sulfonyl group …”

“…The peaks at 6.91−6.94 (B) and 6.97−7−00 ppm (C) are due to the protons closer to the C−O groups, that at 7.21−7.24 ppm (D) to protons closer to the methyl groups, and that at 7.81−7.84 ppm (E) to protons close to the sulfonyl group. 44 FT-IR spectra of PSU-raw and PSU-Scaff are reported in Figure 4c. The aromatic nature of PSU is confirmed by the absorption band in the spectral region between 3038 and 3095 cm −1 , related to the C−H stretching in the aromatic ring.…”

“…As a result, PVDF membranes coated with nanoparticles were produced for the treatment of dyes (Puri et al, 2021; Suresh et al, 2023). To improve the characteristics of membranes, polystyrene was effectively mixed with different additives (Cecile & Hsieh, 2010; Deyrail et al, 2007; Kato et al, 1997) and blend with other organic polymers such as PSF and PVC polymers (Alsalhy, 2012; Essate et al, 2023).…”
