Low-Cost PVD Shadow Masks with Submillimeter Resolution from Laser-Cut Paper

Abstract: We characterize an affordable method of producing stencils for submillimeter physical vapor deposition (PVD) by using paper and a benchtop laser cutter. Patterning electrodes or similar features on top of organic or biological substrates is generally not possible using standard photolithography. Shadow masks, traditionally made of silicon-based membranes, circumvent the need for aggressive solvents but suffer from high costs. Here, we evaluate shadow masks fabricated by CO2 laser processing from quantitative f… Show more

“…Notably, the variances for sputtered vs gold leaf electrode resistivity are comparable, indicating that the lab-based gold leaf fabrication is as reproducible as commercial-grade sputtering. Given the context of PM-ECIS as a platform for measuring biological barriers, this statistical analysis of our microfabrication process provides relevant insight into the interpretation of data obtained from our biological experiments and is also aligned with similar empirical approaches in other publications. …”

“…The typical cost of the mask fabrication is rather affordable, depending on the resolution and can vary between USD 100 and USD 1000. The mask could be produced much more cheaply [ 42 , 43 ] if a m resolution is not crucial.…”

“…For electrode fabrication, a glass wafer was cleaned via subsequent ultrasonication in soapy water for 15 minutes, basic piranha cleaning in a solution of H 2 O : H 2 O 2 : NH 3 at around 70 °C for 5–10 minutes, and O 2 plasma for 15 min. Gold contacts were prepared by evaporation using a custom-made paper mask 50 to form a 10 nm-thick chromium layer as an adhesion layer and a 50 nm-thick gold layer.…”
