In this paper, we study compressive random access (CRA) with two stages for machine-type communication (MTC) in cellular Internet-of-Things (IoT). In particular, we consider the case that each user (IoT device or sensor) has only one short message (of the same length) when it is activated to send data in IoT applications. Two different CRA-based random access schemes are discussed (one is conventional and the other is new based on a simplified handshaking process). Based on the throughput analysis, we show that the CRA-based random access scheme with simplified handshaking process can outperform as its length of payload is adaptively decided depending on the number of active users. Simulation results confirm that the derived throughput expressions agree with them and can be used to design a random access system for MTC with each active device or sensor that has one short message.

A new technology known as the Internet of Things (IoT) uses several sensor devices and communication protocols. By implementing cutting‐edge and modern equipment, people use IoT to make their lives easier. Home automation is one of them, and it works with actuators and sensors. However, increasing the number of devices in the IoT network could degrade the Quality of Service (QoS). Therefore, an appropriate framework in software and hardware can improve the Quality of Experience (QoE) and QoS for all users. One of the critical QoS measures in IoT is called Ultra Reliability and Low Latency Communication (URLLC). URLLC is essential in the IoT network released from the third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) cellular. However, a systematic and comprehensive investigation of the practical procedures for URLLC in IoT needs to be done. This paper comprehensively investigates the existing methodologies in this subject. All the chosen techniques are separated into four categories to obtain a complete picture of the topic: structure‐based, diversity‐based, metaheuristic algorithm‐based, and channel state information. In this paper, we also investigate more benefits and drawbacks of other QoS when URLLC is applied in the IoT network. This paper highlights the challenges of URLLC in IoT networks and describes future open issues in detail to provide an efficient way for researchers in this field.

The upcoming fifth generation (5G) cellular network is required to provide seamless access for a massive number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices over the limited radio spectrum. In the context of massive spectrum sharing among heterogeneous IoT devices, wireless security becomes a critical issue owing to the broadcast nature of wireless channels. According to the characteristics of the cellular IoT network, physical layer security (PHY-security) is a feasible and effective way of realizing secure massive access. This article reviews the security issues in the cellular IoT network with an emphasis on revealing the corresponding challenges and opportunities for the design of secure massive access. Furthermore, we provide a survey on PHY-security techniques to improve the secrecy performance. Especially, we propose a secure massive access framework for the cellular IoT network by exploiting the inherent co-channel interferences. Finally, we discuss several potential research directions to further enhance the security of massive IoT.
