Low-level-laser Therapy as an Alternative Treatment for Primary Herpes Simplex Infection: A Case Report

Abstract: Gingivostomatitis is the most common primary and symptomatic clinical manifestation of HSV-1 infection. Painful oral lesions appear as ulcerative erosions on the gingiva, palate, buccal mucosa, and tongue, leading to eating and drinking difficulties with an evolution between 10-14 days. This paper describes a case of a 19- month-old boy with severe painful Gingivostomatitis lesions. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) was used with an immediate outcome.

“…Then, laser therapy can cause suppression of infection and lesions cannot be seen 12 . Even when it is used in the later stages of infection, laser therapy provides a pain reduction, and accelerates the healing process 11,[13][14][15][16] . It is believed that during the vesicle phase, laser therapy can accelerate the virus proliferation 17 and cause an adverse effect on the process of healing of the lesion 18 .…”

“…Tada laseroterapija može izazvati supresiju infekcije i lezije se ne mogu videti 12 . Čak i kada se koristi u kasnijim fazama infekcije, laseroterapija obezbeđuje smanjenje simptoma bola i ubrzava proces zarastanja 11,[13][14][15][16] . Smatra se da za vreme faze vezikula laseroterapija može ubrzati proliferaciju virusa 17 i izazvati negativan efekat na proces zarastanja lezija.…”

“…LLLT induces nonthermal photochemical reactions called photobiomodulation . Radiation in the visible spectrum is absorbed by chromophores in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, and its effects involve enhancement of adenosine triphosphate production and cell metabolism, thereby accelerating healing . LLLT also results in modulation of the inflammatory process by reducing the levels of prostaglandin E2, cyclo‐oxygenase, and cytokines .…”

“…The problems with conventional treatments have encouraged researchers to seek other treatment options for HSL. Light and laser therapies have attracted attention as a promising new treatment method for this condition . For example, the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using photosensitive agents (e.g.…”

“…Light and laser therapies have attracted attention as a promising new treatment method for this condition. 8,9,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] For example, the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using photosensitive agents (e.g. neutral red, methylene blue) was investigated back in the 1970s, although it did not gain general acceptance at that time because of controversy about its efficacy and unfavourable adverse effect profile caused by phototoxic reactions.…”
