“…However, ABA preculture increased total soluble carbohydrates in R. fluitans and in P. lyellii, the two species that also showed an increase in desiccation tolerance with ABA preculture. In several systems, desiccation tolerance has also been correlated with a decrease in reducing sugars as a percent of the total soluble carbohydrates (Bertossi et al, 2001;Muller et al, 1997;Pukacka and Pukacki, 1997;Van Der Toorn and McKersie, 1995;Albini et al, 1994;Hoekstra et al, 1994;Koster and Leopold, 1988) although this is not always the case (Li and Sun, 1999). No significant change in the percent of total soluble carbohydrates as reducing sugars was observed for any of the liverwort species examined in this study.…”

“…Trehalose has not been reported from seagrasses before, except for a degradation study of Zostera marina, where we found that trehalose contributed up to ;2% of the TNC pools, which is similar to the present study (T. Vichkovitten and M. Holmer unpublished data). The trehalose concentrations are low in Z. marina compared to resurrection plants (Bianchi et al 1993, Albini et al 1994, Ghasempour et al 1998 and it is unlikely that the trehalose concentrations are high enough for it to be directly involved as a storage compound. Trehalose has superior abilities in protein and membrane stabilization under stress conditions, and also remains stable at elevated temperature and at low pH (compared to sucrose) (Goddijn andvan Dun 1999, Wingler 2002).…”

“…Leaves collected from coffee plants under stress treatments were lyophilized and submitted to an extraction process for obtaining low molecular weight oligosaccharides according to Albini et al [44]. Galactinol, raffinose and stachyose were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a Shimadzu system (Japan) equipped with CBM-10A interface module, CTO-10A column oven, LC-10AD pump and with a RID-10A refractive index detector A Supelcogel Ca column (Supelco e USA), 30 cm  7.8 mm and Supelcogel Ca pre-column, 5 cm  4.6 mm were used.…”
