Low Plasma Apelin Levels in Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Plasma apelin is reduced in newly diagnosed and untreated patients with T2DM having no confounders. Regulation of circulating apelin and adiponectin seems to be in the same manner in patients with T2DM. Dysregulation of apelin might be involved in the mechanism of establishment of overt diabetes mellitus as well as associated atherosclerotic complications.

“…Apelin is linked to the pathogenesis of T2D -plasma apelin concentrations are increased in insulin-resistant patients (Li et al 2006), in type T2D patients (Cavallo et al 2012) and in morbidly obese T2D individuals (Soriguer et al 2009), perhaps indicating a compensatory role of apelin in the reduction of insulin resistance. However, conversely, plasma apelin levels are reduced in newly diagnosed T2D patients (Erdem et al 2008) and increased in T2D patients and obese non-diabetic individuals (Boucher et al 2005, Dray et al 2010. The increased expression of apelin in plasma and adipose tissue of obese individuals can, however, be reversed by a hypocaloric diet .…”

“…reported that serum apelin levels in newly diagnosed diabetes patients decreased. 15,27 Similarly, there was a decrease in serum apelin levels in Type 2 diabetes in Chinese population. 28 On the other hand, children with Type 1 diabetes had high serum apelin levels.…”

“…Increased apelin with hyperinsulinemia was observed in obese subjects. [14][15][16] There are studies reporting that the antioxidant capacity is impaired in obesity. 17,18 Sudden or excessive oxygen entrance into the organism due to various metabolic reasons, antioxidant defense system insufficiency or oxidant-antioxidant balance to gravitate towards the oxidant side, which then leads to occurrence of oxidative stress.…”

“…Other adipose tissue-derived peptides such as leptin (6), apelin (7) and visfatin (8) were also reported to have some effects on the atheroclerotic diseases. Among these, synthesis and/or secretion of apelin is dysregulated in a number of conditions leading to atherosclerosis including hypertension (9), diabetes (3,10), and hypercholesterolemia (2,4). Since apelin receptor is expressed by a variety of cells that are involved in atherosclerotic processes, this novel peptide need to be searched thoroughly for its roles in the mechanism of cardiovascular diseases.…”
