Low spin-wave damping in amorphous Co40Fe40B20 thin films

Abstract: A characterization of the magnetic properties of amorphous Co40Fe40B20 thin films, developed for low damping applications in magnon spintronics, using vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) and the magneto-optical Kerr effect is presented. Our films show a very weak uniaxial anisotropy and a low Gilbert damping parameter (α=0.0042). The saturation magnetization MS extracted from the FMR measurements is 1250 kA/m. The frequency dependence of the first perpendicular standing spin waves mode on… Show more

“…In most metallic ferromagnets, the rather large Gilbert damping limits the propagation distance of spin-wave modes. Even though recent developments aiming at the utilization of novel or optimized materials in the field of magnonics show great potential [51,[125][126][127][128], spin-wave damping remains a major challenge.…”

L € osch, 2 We present a study of the influence of the annealing temperature T a on the magnetic properties of Co 40 Fe 40 B 20 thin films. Using a vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) setup and the magneto-optical Kerr effect, the dependence of the Gilbert damping parameter a, the exchange constant A, the saturation magnetization as well as the coercive field and the Kerr signal on T a is reported.…”

“…However, despite being low in relative terms, the spin-wave damping in Py is still substantial and recent years have seen an expansion in efforts directed towards the search for lower-loss metallic and intermetallic alternatives. One material which -on account of its large saturation magnetization and low damping -has been recognized to be attractive for some time, is cobalt iron boron (Co 40 Fe 40 B 20 ) [70][71][72]. Particular attention is also focused on the family of so-called Heusler alloys: intermetallic compounds which, despite containing no ferromagnetic elements, are themselves ferromagnetic [73].…”
