Low Switching Frequency Based Asymmetrical Multilevel Inverter Topology With Reduced Switch Count

Abstract: The inceptions of multilevel inverters (MLI) have caught the attention of researchers for medium and high power applications. However, there has always been a need for a topology with a lower number of device count for higher efficiency and reliability. A new single-phase MLI topology has been proposed in this paper to reduce the number of switches in the circuit and obtain higher voltage level at the output. The basic unit of the proposed topology produces 13 levels at the output with three dc voltage sources… Show more

“…Since the power losses of the power semiconductor, including the conduction and switching losses are the major contributors to the rectifier losses, the total losses only take the semiconductor power losses into consideration in the following discussion. Analysis in this section will be implemented by PLECS software on the power loss distribution of the power semiconductors and the efficiency comparison in the four types of topologies as shown in Section 2, since PLECS software has been widely used in simulation on power electronics losses, on the basis of the component datasheet [23][24][25].…”

“…Therefore, conventional MLI is not suitable for voltage levels beyond five [8]. A large number of modified/hybrid conventional topologies that were proposed required a large number of power semiconductor switches for the generation of higher voltage levels [9]. Each switch requires a separate driver circuit and heat sink.…”
