Lower Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor Levels in Untreated Adolescents With First-Episode Psychosis

Abstract: High incidence of schizophrenia in patients with FEP suggests a relationship between BDNF levels and the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. We suggest that BDNF may be a useful neurobiological marker of early onset schizophrenia.

“…Post mortem studies have revealed lower levels of BDNF mRNA in the prefrontal cortex (Perlman et al., 2004). Also, many in vivo studies have demonstrated lowered BDNF protein concentration in schizophrenia patient blood serum and plasma samples (Şimşek et al., 2015; Yoshimura et al., 2016). Li et al.…”

“…The most recent one, by Singh et al, confirmed lower BDNF level for first‐episode psychosis patients with no effect for treatment regimen (Singh et al, 2020). Among the 29 studies included, only one, by Şimşek et al (2015), was performed on early‐onset population (mean age 14.6 ± 1.6) (Şimşek et al, 2015). Results of the study indicated lower serum level with no association to symptoms and duration of untreated psychosis.…”

“… 46 Indeed a longer DUP appears to be related to a worse short-term 47 and long-term clinical outcome 48 49 in SCZ individuals, as well as with lower BDNF serum levels, 50 although the latter finding has been not replicated in subsequent studies. 51 Other measures of illness severity, such as number of hospital admissions and type of clinical course will be collected for the analysis.…”
