Lower Left Temporal Lobe MRI Volumes in Patients With First-Episode Schizophrenia Compared With Psychotic Patients With First-Episode Affective Disorder and Normal Subjects

Abstract: These findings suggest that temporal lobe abnormalities are present at the first hospitalization for schizophrenia and that low volume of the left posterior superior temporal gyrus gray matter is specific to schizophrenia compared with affective disorder.

“…Diagnoses were confirmed at follow-up interview. Consistent with the literature (e.g., DeLisi et al, 1997;Salisbury et al, 1998;Hirayasu et al, 1998Hirayasu et al, , 1999Hirayasu et al, , 2000Hirayasu et al, , 2001Lee et al, 2002;Lieberman et al, 2001), first-episode was operationally defined as the first psychiatric hospitalization. Median duration of psychotropic medication prior to MRI was short (Table 1).…”

“…The protocols for diagnosis and clinical evaluations have been described in detail in previous studies Hirayasu et al, 1998Hirayasu et al, , 1999Hirayasu et al, , 2000Hirayasu et al, , 2001Lee et al, 2002). Briefly, patients and control subjects met criteria for age (18-55 years), IQ above 75, right-handedness, and negative history for seizures, for head trauma with loss of consciousness, for neurologic disorder, and for any lifetime history of alcohol or other drug dependence.…”

“…A meta-analysis found hippocampal volume (HV) reductions of about 4% in chronic schizophrenia (Nelson et al, 1998) and of about 2.7% in first-episode schizophrenia (Steen et al, 2006) compared to healthy controls (HC). It seems that HV reductions in first-episode psychosis (FEP) are less extensive than in chronic populations Hirayasu et al, 1998;Lawrie et al, 1999;Steen et al, 2006;Velakoulis et al, 2006).…”

“…We have recently examined a larger extent of posterior superior temporal gyrus than that evaluated in Shenton et al (1992) and Hirayasu et al (1998), the planum temporale (Kwon et al 1999, which should be consulted for literature references for this paragraph). This brain region, originally defined as a surface in postmortem work, includes the posterior extension of the superior temporal gyrus, not included in our previous work.…”
