Abstract: Mycobacterium abscessus is a non-tuberculous mycobacterium, causing lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. During pulmonary infection, M. abscessus switches from smooth (Mabs-S) to rough (Mabs-R) morphotypes, the latter being hyper-virulent.
