<b>Evaluation of quantitative parameters of Leydig cell in diabetic adults rats

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The goal of present study was to evaluate the effects of diabetes on quantitative parameters of Leydig cells. Twelve adults Wistar rats were divided in: 1) Diabetic Group (DG), which was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (60 mg kg -1 of body weight); and 2) Control Group (CG), which received citrate buffer intraperitoneal. After eight weeks of diabetic induction, the animals were weighted, anesthetized and testicles were removed and routinely processed to paraffin embedd… Show more

“…for 60 days. GSI is inversely proportional to the reproductive efficiency of the rats[ 57 ] and testicular coefficient (TCT) value, which is directly proportional to reproductive toxicity in testes. [ 58 ] A marginal increase in the GSI in group E4D and E7D was observed after the treatment with piperine for 60 days.…”

“…A reduced testicular weight and GSI (a better way to assess the damage to the testes in relation to the body) in experimental rats is most likely due to decreased levels of male sex hormones and androgen especially plays a pivotal role in sex organs [31]. GSI is inversely proportional to the reproductive efficiency of the rats [32] and a pertinent value to be accessed in reproductive studies. When compared to the treated groups, the GSI was higher in the control group, suggesting a reduction in the animals' commitment to spermatic production after receiving the concentrated extract.…”

“…Cytoplasmic and nuclear volumes were then calculated (cytoplasmic volume = % cytoplasm × nuclear volume/% nucleus; cellular volume = nuclear volume + cytoplasmic volume). The Leydig cell population per testis and gram of testis were calculated by using the volume of one Leydig cell and the total volume of Leydig cells in the testis 12,47 …”

“…Besides, in the same animals, Leydig cells had decreased cytoplasmic volume, cellular volume and population. Several studies show alterations in number, 73,74,78,82 volume 47 and ultrastructure 79,83 of Leydig cells in the offspring of diabetic females and adult diabetic According to Kianifard et al, 83 reductions in the cytoplasmic and cellular volume of Leydig cells may indicate an involution of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (sER), which is the most abundant organelle in this cell. Besides, since the sER is responsible for Leydig cell function, its involution may reflect altered steroid hormone production.…”
