SecLight: A New and Practical VLC Eavesdropping-Resilient Framework for IoT Devices

Abstract: The blooming of the Internet of Things (IoT) needs a communication infrastructure to allow connecting a wide range of devices. Visible light communication (VLC) provides an attractive solution for these IoT devices. However, the broadcast nature makes the VLC prone to be exposed in the reach of eavesdroppers, which undesirably impairs the IoT system security. The negative factors in practical use, such as light reflection, light intensity, channel correlation, and channel estimation error, remain less touched.… Show more

“…The privacy of the user is seriously compromised if an attacker can see the user's message ID, timestamps, source, and destination addresses. While there are several potential answers, the most recent architecture for Eavesdrop resistance employing VLC provides an exciting prospect for protecting IoT devices 48 Resource‐consuming attack : This class contains a wide variety of attacks, such as those based on unfairness, collision, and exhaustion.…”

“…Many contributions in the literature propose VLC-based PLS solutions to enhance security of wireless communication systems [47]. An example is given by SecLight [48]; there light intensity and reflections are combined with the channel estimation to enhance security of VLC in IoT. An interesting set of contributions investigated solutions using jamming to improve security of VLCs [49], [50].…”

“…In this strategy, potential eavesdroppers are deactivated using the jamming activities achieved using the In-band Full Duplex IoT gateway and cooperative helpers. Xiangyu Liu et al [305] proposed a SecLight framework to mitigate eavesdropping in IoT. The devices communicate using Visible Light Communication (VLC) and, the required signal is sent through Light Emitting Diode (LED).…”
