<title>Lesion detection and characterization in digital mammography by Bezier histograms</title>

Abstract: Due to some important properties of Bézier splines, they have great potential use in computer-aided mammogram diagnosis. In this paper, Bézier splines are applied in both lesion detection and characterization processes, where lesion detection is achieved by segmentation using a natural threshold computed from Bézier smoothed histogram; and lesion characterization is achieved by measuring the fitness between Gaussian and Bézier histograms of data projected on principal components of the segmented lesions. Exper… Show more

“…There have been studies on this challenging problem using sophisticated computer vision algorithms: texturebased [5], wavelet-based [6], Markov random field-based [7], fractal-based [8], etc. Even though they showed good performances for some cases, no single model can be used as a general processing model due to the variety of breast tissues and lesions [9]. We proposed a multi-stage ROI detection method that combines image processing techniques and artificial neural networks to accommodate the varieties of tissues and lesions.…”

“…The breast cancer prevention is impossible presently; data indicates declining death rates [2] due to mainly cancer detection where mammography has a big role to play. Widespread mammography use needs aids from computer technology.…”

“…With this image, the thresholds of the regions bounded by the edges are extracted. In [ 17 ], Qi and Snyder proposed a method for mass segmentation. They used B'ezier splines to interpolate histograms, from which they extracted the region with threshold values at local maxima.…”
