<title>Mobile video communications techniques and services</title>

Abstract: This paper describes picture information transmission for portable multimedia terminals. The radio links used in portable multimedia terminals have narrower channel capacity and higher transmission error rates than wired links such as those used in ISDN. To transmit multimedia information of satisfactory quality over radio links, robustness against radio link errors must be improved, because picture deterioration is much more apparent than audio deterioration. First, the effects of transmission errors on pictu… Show more

“…Also, the increased popularity of wireless networks and mobile devices is drawing lots of attentions on ubiquitous multimedia access in the multimedia community in the past decade. Network service providers and researchers are focusing on developing ef cient solutions to ubiquitous access of multimedia data, especially videos, from everywhere using mobile devices (laptops, PDAs or smart phones that can access 3G networks) [1]. Mobile-phone users can watch video programs on their devices by subscribing to the data plans from network service providers, and they can easily use their programmable hand devices to retrieve and reproduce the video content [2].…”

“…Eryurtlu et al [138], [139] from the University of Surrey in the U.K. proposed various improvements to the H.263 scheme. Further important contributions in the field were due to Chen et al [164], Illgner and Lappe [165], Zhang [166], Ibaraki et al [167], and Watanabe et al [168]. Vector quantization arrangements were favored by Ramamurthy and Gersho [173] as well as by Torres and Huguet [174].…”

“…Färber et al [167]- [170] also contributed substantially toward advancing the state of the art in the context of the H.263 codec as well as in motion compensation [168], [169], as did Eryurtlu, Sadka, and Kondoz [174]- [175]. Further important contributions in the field were due to Chen et al [181], Illgner and Lappe [182], Zhang [183], Ibaraki et al [184], Watanabe et al [185], the MPEG-4 consortium's endeavors [71], and the efforts of the Mobile Audio-Video Terminal Consortium. VQ-based schemes were advocated by Ramamurthy and Gersho [149], as well as by Torres and Huguet [150].…”
