Luminescent Solar Concentrators - A review of recent results

Abstract: Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) generally consist of transparent polymer sheets doped with luminescent species. Incident sunlight is absorbed by the luminescent species and emitted with high quantum efficiency, such that emitted light is trapped in the sheet and travels to the edges where it can be collected by solar cells. LSCs offer potentially lower cost per Wp. This paper reviews results mainly obtained within the framework of the Fullspectrum project. Two modeling approaches are presented, i.e., a … Show more

“…LR has been selected as reference as it is considered the state-of-the-art in dyes for LSC applications (Debije and Verbunt, 2012) and its use has been reported in many recent papers (Dienel et al, 2010;Sark et al, 2008;Griffini et al, 2013;Bakr et al, 1999). LR shows a quantum yield (QY) of about 1 even at high concentration (>1 mmol) in polymers and in the solid state (Al-Kaysi and Sang, 2006) and a good photostability (Reisfeld et al, 1994).…”

“…Recently, concepts for overcoming the most severe problems of LSCs have been proposed and this has created renewed interest. [96][97][98][99][100] The severe problem of self-absorption can be overcome by using the antenna systems and materials explained in Figure 9, as we have discussed recently. [80,47] In order to get a first idea regarding the photophysical properties of the chromophores, we show in Figure 10 the absorption and fluorescence spectra of diluted solutions of HY3G in CHCl 3 and Ox + in MeOH.…”
