Lumped element kinetic inductance detectors based on two-gap MgB2 thin films

Abstract: Lumped element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) are made from a single layer superconducting thin film. Because of their low noise and highly multiplexibility, LEKIDs provide a sensitive technology for the detection of millimeter and submillimeter waves. In this work, a 5-pixel 50-nm-thick MgB2 array is made. The microwave properties of the array are measured under dark conditions. We show that the loaded quality factor Q of the resonant circuit is 30 000 at 7.5 K, which is comparable to that of lower-ope… Show more

“…[64] Lumped element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) [65] were made from MgB 2 superconducting films to sensitively detect terahertz waves with a much higher T c . [66] In this study, the MgB 2 superconducting film with c-axis orientation and a thickness of 0.5 mm was prepared on MgO (111) substrate with a dimension of 10mm × 10mm × 0.3 mm by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD). [67] The relative permittivity of the MgO substrate was 9.6.…”

“…The MgB 2 thin films were prepared by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) developed by Xi et al [32]. Details of the HPCVD system used in this work can be found in references [33,34]. Briefly, Mg ingots (>99.5% purity) were placed around a 5 × 5 × 0.3 mm MgO (111) substrate on a molybdenum susceptor, and heated up to 660 • C in 4 kPa ultrahigh pure hydrogen (>99.9999% purity).…”
