Lung function and metabolic syndrome: Findings of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2010 肺功能与代谢综合征:2007–2010全国健康与营养调查研究结果

Abstract: Background Considerable uncertainty remains about obstructive lung function (OLF) in adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS). The aim of the present study was to examine pulmonary function status in adults with and without MetS. Methods We used data from 3109 participants aged ≥20 years of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2010. Subjects’ MetS status was established on the basis of the 2009 harmonizing definition. Participants received spirometry. Results After age adjustment, 79.3% (… Show more

“… 5 The relation between decrease of lung function and MS has been reported using NHANES III (1988–1994) and NHANES 2007–2010. 27 , 28 Here, we also found the similar increased prevalence of comorbidities and mortality in COPD patients using NHANES 2007–2012. In contrast to the previous studies focused on COPD patients, the key finding of this study was that the decrease of lung function was also independent risk factor for some extra-pulmonary diseases and mortality in the non-COPD population.…”

“…Some previous studies have reported the association of reduced lung function with extra-pulmonary diseases and mortality, mostly by comparing COPD patients with normal subjects. [5][6][7][26][27][28][29] The population in NHANES has also been used in some studies. Navaneethan et al reported patients with CKD had higher odds of COPD using NHANES 2007-2012.…”

“…According to recent data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the overall age-adjusted prevalence of MS in U.S. adults is increasing and between 2007–2010 was 34.3% [5]. However, lower prevalence rates are reported in European countries, ranging from 6–30% [69].…”

“…Several groups have investigated the incidence of MetS using different diagnostic methods, including spirometry and health care databases. 15 17 A study by Breyer et al revealed that the prevalence of MetS was higher in patients with COPD. 18 Similarly, in a study involving Asian subjects, the risk for MetS was higher in individuals with airflow obstruction, relative to individuals without obstruction, even after adjustment for potential confounders.…”
