Lung transplantation for post‐COVID‐19 pulmonary fibrosis

Abstract: COVID-19 has affected over a billion people around the world, with over 2 million losing their lives (Worldometer). About 10% of patients infected with COVID-19 develop a serious illness, including respiratory failure, that require advanced life-supporting measures. Mortality among this subgroup exceeds 60%. We present a case of an otherwise healthy 34-year-old male who developed end-stage pulmonary fibrosis following COVID-19 infection. He achieved haemodynamic stability with mechanical ventilation and extrac… Show more

“…Lung transplantation may be a promising treatment for end-stage respiratory failure following PCPF [ 9 , 10 ]. Since fibrotic disease affects around one-third of patients with a severe pulmonary form of COVID-19; this indication could represent a considerable number of patients in the near future [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Select patients with COVID-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (CARDS) requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for an extended period with no potential for recovery, and post-COVID-19 pulmonary fibrosis are being considered for lung transplantation [44]. It is crucial to ensure that appropriate time is allowed for the lungs to recover before patients are considered for lung transplant, especially in patients with organizing pneumonia who have the potential to recover over time, although this recovery may take months [45].…”

“…Gogia et al presented a case of a 34-year-old male who developed end-stage pulmonary fibrosis following COVID-19 infection. A bilateral lung transplantation was carried out in this patient, and they were allowed a discharge from the hospital on day 15 following lung transplantation [ 53 ]. In accordance with Gogia et al, Hall et al also described a case of severe post-covid pulmonary fibrosis in a 52-year-old female.…”
