Luteinizing Hormone Levels in Plasma and Urine in Women During Normal Menstrual Cycles and in Women Taking Combined Contraceptives or Chlormadinone Acetate

Abstract: Radioimmunoassay measurements of luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were made in urine and plasma throughout normal menstrual cycles and cycles when either a combined oral contraceptive or low dosage continuous chlormadinone acetate were being taken by healthy young women. The typical mid-cycle ovulatory increase of LH was suppressed in the cycles when the combined contraceptive preparations were taken but was present in the majority of cycles during the administration of continuous chlormadinone acetate.

“…The hormone excretion pattern of these five subjects is shown in Figures 1 to 5. In the normal pretreatment control cycles the urinary LH and ovarian steroid output was similar to that already described (Orr and Elstein, 1969;Brown and Beischer, 1972).…”

“…30 Most of the cycles during low-dose pregestogen administration are probably ovulatory, as suggested by endometrial morphology and clinical determinations. 31 As a result, an important follicular activity 32 , inversely proportional to the amount of administered progestogen 33 , can be evidenced in women taking this kind of oral contraceptives.…”

“…Dabei wird insbesondere der intermenstruelle Gipfel von FSH und LH urn den 15. Tag unterdrückt (6,7,11,20,21,24,29,31,46,51,55,73,75,77,83,84). Die Wirksamkeit der Ovulationshemmer bei der intermittierenden Porphyrie ließe sich daher über die Hemmung der Gonadotropinsekretion erklären.…”
