Lymphoscintigraphy in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Sentinel Node Biopsy and Its Role in the Surgical Planning

Abstract: These results support the reliability of sentinel node biopsy in OSCC. Presurgical lymphoscintigraphy is essential, because it can modify the surgical procedure.

“…We believe one of the advantages is to identify the individual drainage pattern of these tumours, especially outside the field normally dissected in a traditional ipsilateral supraomohyoid neck dissection. In the head and neck, individual lymphatic drainage can be unpredictable, and our results are concordant with similar studies, which demonstrate that 10–30% of unilateral OCSCC drain bilaterally or to the contralateral neck with 40% of midline tumours draining unilaterally . In a study by Broglie et al ., 15% of lesions localized to the ipsilateral level 4, of which 8% were positive .…”

“…In the head and neck, individual lymphatic drainage can be unpredictable, and our results are concordant with similar studies, which demonstrate that 10-30% of unilateral OCSCC drain bilaterally or to the contralateral neck 1,10 with 40% of midline tumours draining unilaterally. 15 In a study by Broglie et al, 15% of lesions localized to the ipsilateral level 4, of which 8% were positive. 10 These results suggest that the addition of lymphatic mapping when staging the neck for OCSCC may improve the nodal yield and reduce the morbidity of surgery.…”

“…The detection rate of lymphoscintigraphy is ~90–97%, which is similar to that reported in the majority of literature ( 15 , 16 ), indicating that the use of a γ probe in lymphoscintigraphy may provide accurate SLN localization for SLNB. However, the SLN imaging of the patients conducted using lymphoscintigraphy is not fully developed.…”

“…Two authors individually collected data from included articles in forms commensurate with each other. Diagnostic accuracy, represented by DOR, summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve, and area under the curve (AUC), was calculated 1,5,11–102 . DOR was calculated as (true positive [TP]/false positive [FP])/(false negative [FN]/true negative [TN]) to assess diagnostic accuracy with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).…”
