Macro Photogrammetry for the Damage Assessment of Artwork Painted Surfaces

Abstract:
Abstract. In this paper we are presenting our approach and workflow for macro photogrammetry as a complementary method for 3D digitization of polychromies on wood support. Macro photogrammetry can be used for detailed documentation of physical damages in painting layers, underlayers or support. For a better presentation of the context, a selection of typical physical damages, relevant to this study, are explained. Two case studies are presented. Two wooden icons realized w… Show more

“…However, to get a proper macro photo set, it is necessary to ensure accurate parallel camera pan both horizontally and vertically. In Anghelut , ă and Rădvan [21], they presented a workflow using macro photogrammetry for the 3D digitization of polychromies on a wooden support. The camera was mounted on a robust and precise positioning system (ARTIST CPS-200 from ArtInnovation) to achieve camera movement on all three axes.…”

“…Applications of terrestrial multi-view image-based modeling, and texturing, for heritage applications, vary considerably [8,9]. This technique has been implemented towards high-resolution recording and evaluation of the state of preservation of stone [10], wood [11], and painted artworks [12]. Although, unless measurable geometrical changes have occurred on the object, close-range photogrammetry with visible imagery has little to offer for the assessment of degradation on its own.…”

“…Applications of terrestrial multi-view image-based modeling and texturing for large-scale heritage applications vary considerably. This technique has been implemented towards high resolution documentation and virtual restoration of small artefacts [8], damaged pottery [9], rock art [10], wall paintings [11] and decorative friezes [12], comprehensive investigations on pre-historic engravings [13], ancient Egyptian coffins [14] and ancient inscriptions [15], and evaluation of damage [16] and restoration works [17] on painted surfaces.…”
