Macroinvertebrate Assemblages in the River System of Aluna, Initao, Misamis Oriental, Philippines

Abstract

Unregulated human activities had resulted into water pollution and using bio indicators as measure of the extent of pollution contribute some promising results. Hence, this study tried to describe the extent of pollution in Aluna River using macroinvertebrate population. Standard methods of specimen collection were done. Results showed that the water quality condition of the upstream until midstream portions of Aluna River were relatively good, while relatively polluted water was observed at downstream based on the composition of macroinvertebrates. Dominance of pollution-sensitive macroinvertebrates (e.g. mayfly) was observed in the upstream, while the pollution-tolerant taxa(e.g. leech) were observed at downstream. The result of the study could provide preliminary information to be translated into some regulatory measures in a form of implementing the resolutions and ordinances enacted related to pollution of water.
