MADVent: A low‐cost ventilator for patients with COVID‐19

Abstract: The COVID‐19 pandemic has produced critical shortages of ventilators worldwide. There is an unmet need for rapidly deployable, emergency‐use ventilators with sufficient functionality to manage COVID‐19 patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. Here, we show the development and validation of a simple, portable and low‐cost ventilator that may be rapidly manufactured with minimal susceptibility to supply chain disruptions. This single‐mode continuous, mandatory, closed‐loop, pressure‐controlled, … Show more

“…The COVID-19 emergency has highlighted the need for research into EVs [27][28][29]. In general, there is a lack of peer-reviewed articles that describe the science and engineering of EV design and performance, and there is a need for new research into EV design, performance, and testing.…”

“…Industrial enterprises and scientists also tried to succeed in development of low-cost ventilators [11][12][13][14][15]. Despite the fact that Garmendia et al [16] designed and clinically tested even much cheaper CPAP machines proposing 70-80 EUR instead of 600 EUR, the next study shows that early CPAP intervention could result in a potentially viable treatment option for patients only during the rst days of hospitalisation [17].…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, the ALIVE Vent is the only COVID-19-inspired, non-artificial manual breathing unit (AMBU) bag ventilator to date, which is capable of meeting the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) guidelines for mass casualty respiratory failure ventilator stockpiling and has been tested on live large animals. It is electronically driven by compressed air and oxygen and uses our openly available software application to implement precise, reliable control of the most clinically relevant ventilation variables, unlike many AMBU bag solutions [13][14][15]. The incentive to design the ALIVE Vent is entirely humanitarian and does not pursue any commercial interest.…”
