MADYS: the Manifold Age Determination for Young Stars

Abstract: Context. The unrivalled astrometric and photometric capabilities of the Gaia mission have given new impetus to the study of young stars: both from an environmental perspective, as members of comoving star-forming regions, and from an individual perspective, as targets amenable to planet-hunting direct-imaging observations. Aims. In view of the large availability of theoretical evolutionary models, both fields would benefit from a unified framework that allows a straightforward comparison of physical parameters… Show more

“…The interstellar extinction correction was obtained from the Leike & Enßlin (2019) 3D dust map, based on Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2). Using the MADYS toolkit (Squicciarini & Bonavita 2022), the extinction was integrated in a column out to the position of Delorme 1 (AB)b, resulting in A V = 0.009 ± 0.003 mag. This is a negligible contribution.…”

“…Here we assume "classical" PMS evolutionary tracks as initially calculated byIben (1965) and more recently by many other researchers(Squicciarini & Bonavita 2022). There are substantial differences among the tracks, and the evolution may further differ when the effects of accretion, internal magnetic fields, and surface star spots are considered(Baraffe & Chabrier 2010;Feiden & Chaboyer 2013;Somers & Pinsonneault 2015;Kunitomo et al 2017).…”

“…Inset: Relative motion between Cb and C, with C set as the primary; the error bar associated with Cb is small enough to be hidden behind the diamond. madys tool (Squicciarini & Bonavita 2022): we combined PACO (K1, K2) contrasts, the 2MASS K s magnitude of the primary (Cutri et al 2003), plus the system's color excess (E(B − V) = 0.011 ± 0.021 mag) and age (17 +3 −4 Myr). For the purpose of accounting for theoretical uncertainties on the final estimates, the computation was performed by comparison with two different models suited for the age and mass range of interest: the Ames-Dusty models (Allard et al 2001) and the BT-Settl models (Allard 2016).…”
