Abstract

This entry provides an overview of the history, production, readership, and influence of magazine journalism. Magazines are known for their ability to connect and build relationships with specific segments of readers using a mix of informative and entertaining articles presented in an engaging package. Although magazines have existed in print for centuries, the digital age has introduced new platforms and tools for sharing content and interacting with readers. This entry addresses the history of magazines from the 1600s until today, as well as examines changing definitions of magazines, the key dimensions through which scholars have addressed this medium, and suggestions for directions for continued magazine scholarship.
