Magnetic Behavior of TmTe at High Pressure

Abstract: We have performed magnetic measurements on the single crystal TmTe at extremely high pressure using a novel diamond anvil cell. Between 2 K and 80 K, the magnetic susceptibility traces are unchanged for pressures up to 2.6 GPa. At 3.6 GPa, a paramagnet-ferromagnet transition appeared at T C = 12.2 K, but disappears above 6.1 GPa. We postulate that the origin of ferromagnetic phase is related to the pressure induced valence change of Tm.
