Magnetic fields in barred galaxies

Abstract: Abstract. The total and polarized radio continuum emission of 20 barred galaxies was observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at λ3, 6, 18 and 22 cm and with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at λ6 cm and 13 cm. Maps at 30 angular resolution are presented here. Polarized emission (and therefore a large-scale regular magnetic field) was detected in 17 galaxies. Most galaxies of our sample are similar to non-barred galaxies with respect to the radio/far-infrared flux correlation and equipartition stre… Show more

“…This means that magnetic fields are dynamically passive, which has been confirmed by polarization observations of bar galaxies (e.g. Beck et al 2002). Polarized emission has also been detected in the halos of some edge-on galaxies (e.g.…”

“…In several barred galaxies the topology of magnetic field is very similar to NGC 1365 (e.g. NGC 1672, NGC 7552 and NGC 1097 -Beck et al 2002). In spiral galaxies the synchrotron observations also reveal the presence of strong polarized halos extending few kiloparsecs from the disks and having the X-shape topology.…”

“…The sample of 20 radio emission maps of barred galaxies (Beck et al 2002) show that the central region of the galaxy NGC 1365 has the strongest polarized emission. In the outer disk of this galaxy the polarized magnetic arms are well visible between the bar and spiral arms similarly to spiral galaxies.…”
