Magnetic ordering and spin excitations in the frustrated magnetMnSc2S4

Abstract: The A-site spinel compound MnSc 2 S 4 exhibits strong frustration effects with a low ordering temperature ͑T N = 2.3 K͒. Detailed neutron-scattering investigations have been performed to study the magnetic ordering process and the associated magnetic excitations. The magnetic structure found at T = 1.5 K is a spiral within the a-b plane characterized by a propagation vector of q = ͑3/4,3/4,0͒. The magnetic ordering process is spectroscopically reflected by a change from a purely quasielastic to an inelastic re… Show more

“…These compounds reveal broad spin-liquid (MnSc 2 S 4 ) and spin-orbital liquid (FeSc 2 S 4 ) regimes for the temperature range T N < T < |Θ CW | characterized by strongly enhanced dynamic spin and orbital correlations as evidenced by neutron scattering experiments. 19,20 In aluminum oxide spinels with the A-sites occupied by Fe and Co ions no long-range order was detected down to 2 K despite the presence of strong AFM exchange interactions as indicated by their large negative CW temperature Θ CW ~ -100 K. At low temperatures these spinels undergo short-range order. For example, the direction.…”

“…Refined neutron scattering data in Ref. [6] indicated spiral order of the type discussed here with wavevector q = (q, q, 0) and spins aligned within the (001) plane. We see that the Landau theory indeed captures this order, provided the phenomenological parameters c 1 , c 2 are taken to lie within region I of the phase diagram in Fig.…”

“…1 For the specific material MnSc 2 S 4 , the magnetic structure is known from neutron diffraction. 6 At low temperature the ordering wavevector is k = q ≡ 3π/2(1, 1, 0), and the refinement indicates ferromagnetic J 1 < 0. Comparison to the theoretical structure and the measured Curie-Weiss temperature allows one to constraint the couplings 1 .…”
