The relationship between rheological features in the absence of a magnetic field and magnetic response was investigated for κ-carrageenan magnetic hydrogels containing carbonyl iron particles. The concentration of carrageenan was varied from 1.0 to 5.0 wt%, while the concentration of carbonyl iron was kept at 70 wt%. The magnetic response revealed that the change in storage modulus ΔG′ decreased inversely proportional to the carrageenan concentration. A characteristic strain γ1 where G′ equals to G″ was seen in a strain range of 10−3. It was found that ΔG′ was inversely proportional to the characteristic stress at γ1. Another characteristic strain γ2 where the loss tangent significantly increased was also analyzed. Similar to the behavior of γ1, ΔG′ was inversely proportional to γ2. The characteristic stresses at γ1 and γ2 were distributed at 80–720 Pa and 40–310 Pa, respectively. It was revealed that a giant magnetorheology higher than 1 MPa can be observed when the characteristic stresses at γ1 and γ2 are below approximately 240 Pa and 110 Pa, respectively.

The rheological properties and shear performance of magnetorheological (MR) gels have been extensively studied based on experimental methods. However, viscoelastic theoretical models that can quantify the interaction between the matrix and particles, as well as numerical simulations on the mechanical properties and the microstructure evolution of MR gels, are still relatively few and need to be further investigated. In this paper, based on the non-Newtonian fluid equation and Kelvin viscoelastic model, a modified viscoelastic resistance model is proposed, which can describe the interaction between the matrix and particles. The consistency coefficient, flow behavior index, particle size, and motion velocity are considered comprehensively in the viscoelastic resistance equation. Based on the established theoretical model, the numerical simulation approach is developed to study the evolution of chain-like microstructures and the shear properties of MR gels. The response time of MR gels under different magnetic fields and matrixes is analyzed from the perspective of energy. It shows that the effect of magnetic field intensity on the shear strength of MR gels is consistent with the magnetization characteristics of particles. The maximum shear stress and flow stress are significantly affected by viscosity parameters of the matrix and shear rate, which are related to the strength of shear-bearing chains and recombination rate of dissociative chains. The relevant influence mechanism of the microstructures on the macroshear properties is explored.

Fractional-order viscoelastic modeling of the magnetic field dependent transmissibility response of MRE isolator

In the present study, a modeling approach to estimate the parameters of the MRE isolator model with respect to the frequency-response curve is presented. To concur the response of the isolator over wide frequency range, fractional order based Kelvin Voigt model comprised of three parameters and the fractional Zener model having four parameters are proposed. An isolator operating in shear-mode is developed, and its performance is evaluated through the transmissibility tests. The parameters of the model are identified by minimizing the error between the transmissibility response from the MRE isolator model and the experimental results. A polynomial function is used to generalize the variation of these parameters with respect to the input current. The response predicted by the MRE isolator models confirms that both fractional Kelvin Voigt and fractional Zener modeling approaches are effective in portraying the transmissibility response. The fractional Zener MRE isolator model is more accurate and can reproduce the experimentally determined magnitude and phase response of the transmissibility with an accuracy greater than 91.5% and 84.87% respectively. On the contrary, the fractional Kelvin Voigt model is simpler in form, and it effectively reproduced the magnitude of the transmissibility response with an accuracy higher than 86.35% and the phase response greater than 83.77%.
