PurposeConsidering the problems faced by the home appliance industry in Iran, such as the increase in waste, lack of information transparency and lack of traceability of manufactured products, etc. the companies in the home appliance industry are moving toward Industry 4.0 and have been prompted to use it. On the other hand, the adoption of Industry 4.0 is associated with challenges that may lead to the failure of the adoption project and the bankruptcy of home appliance manufacturers. This study identified the challenges in the implementation of Industry 4.0 on current status and provided suitable solutions to overcome the identified challenges.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, a review of the literature and background of Industry 4.0 identified the challenges that influence the adoption of Industry 4.0. To measure the current status of the identified challenges, the opinions of experts in the Iranian home appliance industry were used. To find solutions to the challenges in the adoption of Industry 4.0 in the Iranian home appliance industry, a fuzzy cognitive mapping and scenario design were used.FindingsThe results of this study show that to face the challenge of data sharing, skilled personnel should be effectively promoted among workers in the home appliance industry. The results of this study also show that the barriers to cooperation should be removed to reduce the impact of the IT Security Concerns challenge.Originality/valueThis paper is the first article that identifies the challenges and effective solutions for implementing Industry 4.0 in the home appliance industry.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of Industry 4.0, the demand for skilled professionals well-versed in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is escalating. However, a significant challenge faced in educational settings is the lack of comprehensive and effective methodologies for imparting practical knowledge and skills in IoT. This paper presents an approach for designing and implementing an Internet of Things (IoT) laboratory in which students may practice and comprehend many components of an IoT environment, such as analysis of sensor data, IoT platform development, and setup of messaging protocols. The teaching methodology adopts a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) framework, which integrates teachers, classrooms, and resources to create a comprehensive learning environment. Bloom's taxonomy is employed to assess the efficacy of the suggested technique in terms of cognitive skills and knowledge acquisition. The evaluation procedure demonstrated the advantages of a hybrid learning environment, which integrated both face-to-face and remote instruction. The case study is conducted in an engineering higher education course on first year students. The findings of this paper lay the groundwork for a remotely deliverable IoT training course, contributing to the advancement of IoT education and equipping students with the necessary skills for the evolving landscape of Industry 4.0.

PurposeThe heterogeneous character of Industry 4.0 opens opportunities for studies to understand the difficulties and challenges found in the transformation process of manufacturers. This article aims to present a critical analysis of the modernization process of an Industry 3.0 automated cell into a fully autonomous cell of Industry 4.0. The objective is to elucidate the difficulties found in this transition process and the possible ways to overcome the challenges, focusing on the management perspective.Design/methodology/approachFor this, the needed steps for the technology transition were defined and the main I4.0 enabling technologies were applied, such as the application of machine learning algorithms to control quality parameters in milling.FindingsThe main challenges found were related to the obsolescence of the equipment present in the cell, challenges in data integration and communication protocols, in addition to the training of people who work actively in the project team. The difficulties faced were discussed based on similar studies in the literature and possible solutions for each challenge.Originality/valueThis understanding of possible barriers in the modernization process, and the step-by-step defined for this transition, can be important references for professionals working in manufacturing industries and researchers who aim to deepen their studies in this important and disruptive stage of world industrialization.
