Based on Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) values, nitrogen (N) deficiency, nutrient need, and the effect of fertilizer treatments on crop conditions can be quickly estimated, but the method of SPAD measurement significantly affects the accuracy of estimation. In field experiments near Debrecen, Hungary, we measured the reliability and accuracy of SPAD measurements in maize and potato populations using a Minolta SPAD-502 meter (Minolta, Tokyo, Japan). The aim of our study was to determine which SPAD measurement methods are capable of detecting small differences in the SPAD values. During the examination of maize ear leaves, we determined the distribution of SPAD values along the leaf blade and then identified single-and multipoint measurement methods. By comparing the results of the measurement methods we established that the single-point-based measurements are less suitable for the determination of the average SPAD value of the leaf blade than the multipoint-based measurements. Also, we showed that the increase in the number of measurement points does not influence the accuracy of the measurement in the case of systematic measurement methods based on the distribution of SPAD values. Thus we recommend five-point measurements to obtain the average SPAD values of the ear leaves: the tip of the leaf blade and at one quarter and one half of the leaf blade from the base on both the right and left sides. From the measurements conducted in potato, we showed that the SPAD values change at every foliar level and that the measurements carried out on the middle foliar level provide the closest correlation with the average SPAD values of the leaf canopy. Based on these results, we recommend making measurements at different foliar levels or on the middle foliar level to determine the average SPAD value of the potato leaf canopy.

A combined estimation model, artificial neural network (ANN) combined with partial least square regression (PLS) method, has been developed for estimation of rapeseed N status. Spectra tests were performed on the rapeseed canopy of 150 samples in the field using a spectrophotometer (325-1075nm). 5 optimal PLS principal components were determined by PLS analysis with cross-validation. They were selected as the input of BP neural network to establish the prediction model. The node number of input layer, hidden layer, and output layer was 5, 5, and 1. 110 samples were used as training set and the left 40 samples formed prediction set. The result showed that the prediction performance was excellent with the correlation value of 0.95405, higher than the result (0.8764) obtained only by using PLS method. Most of the relative standard deviation (RSD) was under 5% and the accuracy of prediction reached 95%. Thus, it was concluded that the proposed PLS-ANN model for the spectroscopic estimation of rapeseed N status was superior to other existing spectroscopic methods based on Vis/NIRS.

Service crops are crops grown to provide services to other cash crops, rather than for production purposes, with the ultimate aim of improving the environmental and production performances of cropping systems. Service crops can be intercropped with cash crops to facilitate interactions between crops and to optimize the use of the cropping season. Many terms exist to describe these practices, which highlights their diversity. However, this diversity of terms may be a source of confusion. Here, we present an overview of the current uses of intercropped service plants in temperate cropping systems, with the main services they provide and their management. (1) First, we show that a limited range of service crop species, mostly from the Fabaceae family, have been studied to date. This finding suggests that the diversity of species and cultivar resources that can be used as service crops has been poorly explored in the literature. In contrast, the combinations of service and cash crops tested appear wider. We address this diversity by defining synchronous intercropping, living mulch and relay intercropping.(2) Then, we show that intercropped service crops can efficiently reduce weed biomass and pest attacks and improve nitrogen cycling, thereby increasing soil fertility and improving crop nutrition. The intensity of these services is positively associated with service crop biomass, but excessive service crop biomass increases the risk of competition with cash crops. (3) The balance between the services and disservices provided can primarily be interpreted in terms of biomass production of coexisting crops. The resulting effect of service crops on cash crop yield is variable and reflects the integration of the effects of the various individual services, together with possible disservices. (4) The diversity in management methods makes it possible to manage this trade-off and to adapt the system to different conditions with a few tested species.
