Maize response to macronutrients and potential for profitability in sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: 24Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is plagued by low productivity and little research is available 25 on the attainable responses and profitability to applied nutrients under variable 26 environments. The objective of this study was to determine the attainable maize grain 27 response to and potential of profitability of N, P and K application in SSA using Both response to fertilizer and value cost ratio (VCR) are highly variable and no more 32 than 61% cases for N, 43% for P and 25% for K attain VCR of 2 or more. Als… Show more

“…Further, delineating the type of maize responses clearly separates sites where NPK amendments can be recommended from those that still require further attention. In agreement with Kihara, et al [70] substantiating the highly variable profitability of fertilizer use helps farmers to make well-informed decisions on fertilizer use.…”

“…The observed response of maize yield to nitrogen application in farmers' fields in SSA is often less than expected based on data from on-farm trials (e.g. Kihara et al 2016;Vanlauwe et al 2011). Our alternative specifications were designed to shed light on possible interactions underlying such unexpected effects.…”

“…The high cost of fertilizers and low value cost ratios (VCR; the economic value of increased crop yield divided by the cost of the fertilizer) for the use of fertilizers on cereal crops are a deterrent to their widespread use in sub-Saharan Africa (Kihara et al 2015). Part of the reason for the low VCR is that inappropriate fertilizer blends are recommended, resulting in lower yields and returns or higher costs if nutrients are applied that are not needed for the particular crop-soil.…”
