Climate change is expected to enhance the hydrological cycle in northern latitudes reducing the salinity in the Baltic Sea, a land‐locked marginal sea with a large catchment area located in northern Europe. With the help of ocean simulations forced by historical atmospheric and hydrological reconstructions and local observations, we analyzed long‐term changes in the sea surface salinity of the Baltic Sea as well as its latitudinal gradient. The variability of both is dominated by multidecadal oscillations with a period of about 30 years, while both atmospheric variables, wind and river runoff, contribute to this variability. Centennial changes show a statistically significant positive trend in the North‐South gradient of sea surface salinity for 1900–2008. This change is mainly attributed to increased river runoff from the northernmost catchment indicating a footprint of the anthropogenic impact on salinity with consequences for the marine ecosystem and species distributions.

Impact of human disturbance on the biogeochemical silicon cycle in a coastal sea revealed by silicon isotopes

Biogeochemical silicon (Si) cycling in coastal systems is highly influenced by anthropogenic perturbations in recent decades. Here, we present a systematic study on the distribution of stable Si isotopes of dissolved silicate (δ30SiDSi) in a highly eutrophic coastal system, the Baltic Sea. Besides the well‐known processes, diatom production and dissolution regulating δ30SiDSi values in the water column, we combined field data with a box model to examine the role of human disturbances on Si cycling in the Baltic Sea. Results reveal that (1) damming led to increased δ30SiDSi values in water but had little impacts on their vertical distribution; (2) decrease in saltwater inflow due to enhanced thermal stratification had negligible impacts on the δ30SiDSi distribution. An atypical vertical distribution of δ30SiDSi with higher values in deep water (1.57–1.95‰) relative to those in surface water (1.24–1.68‰) was observed in the central basin. Model results suggest the role of enhanced biogenic silica (BSi) deposition and subsequently regenerated dissolved silicate (DSi) flux from sediments. Specifically, eutrophication enhances diatom production, resulting in elevated exports of highly fractionated BSi to deep water and sediments. In situ sedimentary geochemical processes, such as authigenic clay formation, further fractionate Si isotopes and increase pore‐water δ30SiDSi values, which then leads to pore‐water DSi flux carrying higher δ30SiDSi compositions into deep water. Our findings provide new quantitative information on how the isotope‐based Si cycle responds to human perturbations in coastal seas and shed lights on shifts of Si export to open ocean.

Suboxic and anoxic conditions in the Gdansk basins’ deep water (the Baltic sea)

Variability of oxygen and hydrogen sulphide concentrations in the Gdansk basins deep water of the Baltic Sea for the last 25 years was analyzed. It was shown that suboxic and anoxic conditions in deep water were mainly determined by Baltic inflow frequency and intensity. Oxygen concentration in the bottom layer of the Gdansk basins increased strongly in 13 months after Major Baltic Inflow events (MBI). There were three periods of strong increasing of dissolve oxygen concentration in deep water since 1992 till 2018 after MBI in 1993, in 2003 and 20142016. It was shown that at the bottom of the Gdansk basins hydrogen sulphide was detected during 79 months till 22.5 years after MBI. Quality evaluation of dissolved oxygen distribution reanalysis was also conducted in this work. It can be noted good reproduction of field data by the reanalysis in its quality part; however, in most cases the observable maximum concentrations in dissolved oxygen distribution are understated, sometimes even several times.
