Maker fringes revisited: second-harmonic generation from birefringent or absorbing materials

Abstract: We present a new formulation of Maker fringes in parallel-surface films, using self-consistent boundary conditions for reflections and allowing for any degree of refractive-index dispersion. This treatment of the second-harmonic reflections and dispersion, unlike a number of previous derivations, leads correctly to the expected form for the effective second-harmonic d coefficients. Complete expressions with physically meaningful factors are given for the generated second-harmonic power for either absorbing or … Show more

“…In fact, this SHG result with the orientational distribution obtained from the polarized fluorescence measurement could be used to determine the ratio of diagonal to offdiagonal hyperpolarizability component, using (2) ZXX / (2) ZZZ ) 0.0097 deduced from Maker's fringe analysis. 37 The hemicyanine molecules have seven nonvanishing hyperpolarizability components of zzz , zxx , zyy , xzx , yzy , xxz , and …”

“…SHG coefficients (d33) were derived from the analysis of measured Maker-fringes with the Pascal fitting program according to the literature procedure. 17 The values of d31 and d33 for polymer 7 are 0.63 pm/V and 1.85 pm/V, respectively. This value is lower than that of the Y-type polyester, which is near 2.82 pm/V.…”

“…SHG coefficients (d 33 ) were derived from the analysis of measured Maker-fringes with Pascal fitting program according to the literature procedure. 27 The values of d 33 and d 31 for polymer 4 are 3.45 × 10 -9 and 1.33 × 10 -9 esu, respectively. These d33 value is higher than that of the polyester containing dioxynitrostilbene, which is 1.42 × 10 -9 esu, 25 but is lower than those with dioxybenzylidenemalononitrile, which are in the range 4.46 ~ 6.48 × 10 -9 esu.…”
