Making chocolate-covered broccoli

Abstract: Assessing the amount of carbohydrates in their food is central for people with diabetes mellitus on intensive insulin therapy. This can be a challenging task for adults, but it is particularly so for young people since being a teenager takes attention from disease management. Learning happens in everyday life, but formal diabetes education is also considered an important aspect of diabetes self-management. In a case study we wanted to investigate how, and to which extent, to add motivation (chocolate) to learn… Show more

“…Some papers point to general characteristics of self-care, such as being difficult to achieve [Chatterjee et al 2012] or requiring support [Camerini et al 2011]. Others mention that self-care has a practical nature that requires patients to take care of their health [Storni 2010] by observing signs, managing symptoms, and performing lifestyle decisions [Mamykina et al 2006;Aarhus et al 2009] to avoid further problems [Glasemann et al 2010]. Only in one paper is an attempt made to formally define self-care; Aarhus and Ballegaard define self-care as "the tasks a person has been requested to do outside a clinical setting by healthcare providers" [Aarhus and Ballegaard 2010].…”

“…(1) Technology can help in the self-management of a chronic condition that is especially difficult to manage due to its characteristics and treatment (17 studies). User-Centred Design [Mamykina et al 2008;Güldenpfennig and Fitzpatrick 2013] Participatory Design [Glasemann et al 2010;Kusk et al 2013] Ethnographically Inspired [Mamykina et al 2006[Mamykina et al , 2008Aarhus and Ballegaard 2010;Kilbourn 2010;Storni 2010Storni , 2011Grönvall and Verdezoto 2013a] (2) Chronic conditions represent a large cost for healthcare systems, and these may be reduced through the introduction of technology (four studies). (3) Introducing technology is seen as an opportunity to explore technology and understand self-care (eight studies).…”

“…Thus, many available models inform designs that share these limitations (Riley et al 2011). This contributes to poor uptake of technologies by clients, provider uncertainty regarding how to increase technology utilization, and technologies that do not fit naturally within existing care systems (Gilbody et al 2015;Mohr et al 2017a, b).…”

“…Additionally, researchers have applied HCD to innovate new systems to support the health of children and adolescents. This includes designing or adapting technologies to encourage children and youth to exercise more (Miller and Mynatt 2014;Toscos et al 2006), manage their diabetes (Glasemann et al 2010;Toscos et al 2012), and engage in other healthy behaviors (Bisafar and Parker 2016). There have even been considerations for how personal health records could be tailored specifically to the needs of teenagers (Park et al 2015).…”

“…"Dementia doesn't just affect the person…it affects their whole social circle, their whole family, their whole world" (Jordan, 20) It is estimated that there are approximately 46 million people living with dementia worldwide [35]. Dementia is an umbrella term which encompasses a range of conditions, with various symptoms, caused by a degeneration of neurons in the brain.…”
