Mobile phones and the experience of time: New perspectives from a deprivation study of teenagers

A number of studies have sought to understand how mobile phones affect time practices, and beyond them, the experience of time in users’ daily lives. This article is a further effort in that direction, employing the deprivation study method. We conducted a field study of 80 adolescents, or “cellular natives,” separating them from their cellphones for 1 week. The findings indicate that the cellphone’s absence indeed had a dominant impact on a variety of adolescents’ time-related practices and experience, that yielded in turn both negative and positive feelings. We propose three main axes for understanding the cellphone’s implications for the time experience: The mobile’s flexible time v. Rigid time, its ritual time v. Linear time, and its fragmented time v. Continuous time. In all these dimensions, we point to distinct features of the time experience associated with the mobile phone, and also try to relate it to the emotional state and state of mind of today’s teens. In conclusion, we propose that a broad understanding of the cellphone’s role need to include the aspect of time, at least as it is experienced by adolescents in our current media climate.

O artigo visa compreender as dinâmicas de visibilidade da mobilização on-line antirracismo em 2020 no Twitter e na mídia tradicional on-line brasileira. Trabalhamos com dois materiais. O primeiro é um conjunto de tweets (n = 5.811.499) com menções ao BlackLivesMatter e ao VidasNegrasImportam de 12 de maio a 19 de julho. O segundo estuda 1.650 textos de sites de notícias brasileiros sobre os mesmos temas. Analisando a dinâmica da comunicação e a temporalidade em ambas as mídias, buscamos entender como o assunto foi tratado pela cobertura jornalística e pela mobilização dos usuários. Nossos resultados apontam que o Twitter incorpora primeiro episódios de violência aos movimentos antirracismo, enquanto a mídia tradicional oferece uma cobertura mais estável ao longo do tempo.

The mobile ontology of locative media and ubiquity of location-aware technologies have led to an explicit focus on “where” and an implicit focus on “when” in geomedia studies. While welcoming this focus, we argue that this spatial bias has led the temporal dimensions of geomedia to be overlooked. Despite the growing interest that draws academic attention to mediation of time and temporal dimensions of media and data practices, there is still limited discussion on time and temporality of geomedia. We aim to fill this gap and open a debate about the temporality of geomedia based on seven oral history interviews that we conducted with mobile media scholars who pioneered in research in mobile phones from late 1990s onwards. These historical accounts include the narratives of how mobile phones were used for time-keeping, synchronizing, presencing, and coordinating everyday life. Hence, this article grounds mediation of time in the histories of geomedia.
