“…The closely related bovine gammaherpesviruses AlHV-1 and OvHV-2, as well as a more distantly related primate gammaherpesvirus, herpesvirus saimiri, are classified as members of the genus Rhadinovirus. They are apathogenic in their natural hosts but cause serious lymphoproliferative diseases in other species (Reid & Buxton, 1989 ;Fleckenstein & Desrosiers, 1982). Accordingly, PLHV could be apathogenic in pigs but pathogenic in other species.…”

“…Some of these ruminant viruses (alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 and OvHV-2) are associated with malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), a systemic, usually fatal, lymphoproliferative disorder of artiodactyla. MCF occurs after transmission to foreign hosts, while the natural hosts of these viruses are only latently infected (Heuschele, 1988;Reid & Buxton, 1989;Crawford et al, 1998;Albini et al, 2003).Based on this evidence, gammaherpesviruses are of major concern when pigs are used as organ donors for xenotransplantation. Nucleic acid-based (Ehlers et al, 1999b;Chmielewicz et al, 2003a) and 178 bp (excluding primer binding sites) were obtained, the length depending upon the herpesvirus species.…”

“…3,21 Although the greatest attention has been given to the wildebeest-and sheep-derived agents, MCF might be linked to gammaherpesviruses of other species belonging to the family Bovidae. 16 Viruses antigenically and genomically related to AHV-1 have been recovered from hartebeest and topi (alcelaphine herpesvirus 2 [AHV-2]) 13,22,24 and from a roan antelope (hippotragine herpesvirus 1 [HiHV-1]). 15 Because AHV-2 and HiHV-1 have each been shown to induce MCF in rabbits following experimental inoculation, 15 they may also induce MCF in ruminant species other than those from which they were originally isolated.…”
