Malignant orbital teratoma in a neonate

Abstract: Teratoma of the orbit is rare; very few cases have been published in literature. A case of orbital teratoma in a neonate is presented where the proptosis was massive enough to obscure the eyeball. Clinically, the diagnosis of teratoma was considered. As there was no possibility of salvaging the eye, exenteration of the orbit was done. Orbital teratomas are generally benign. Histopathological examination revealed the features of malignant teratoma.

“…Kivelä and Tarkkanen classified orbital teratomas as: primary intraocular teratoma, primary orbital teratoma, combined orbital and extra orbital teratoma, and secondary orbital teratoma. [4]Our case was combined orbital and extra orbital teratoma. Clinically, orbital teratomas present in early days of life as proptosis.…”

“…[2]Usually the orbital teratoma are localized and benign; however, very few have malignant potential. [3][4][5] The tumor grows rapidly, causing destructive proptosis and exposure keratopathy within days. [5] This leads to poor prognosis for vision or conservation of the globe in addition to considerable disfigurement.…”

“…on the malignant orbital teratoma (OT) in a 1-day-old neonate. [ 1 ] The authors have nicely described the clinical presentation, successful surgical management, and the outcome of the neonate. It is known that OT could be an isolated lesion or part of a generalized disorder.…”

“…[ 3 ] Although Prakash et al . [ 1 ] did a systemic examination that did not reveal anomalies, this does not totally exclude the presence of these anomalies, particularly minor ones, as the baby was 1 day old and time is needed for the complete evolution of these anomalies. Moreover, the authors mentioned that the computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging of the head was not done as the ultrasound showed that the tumor was localized to the orbit.…”
