Malignant struma ovarii

Abstract: Malignant struma ovarii is a rare form of ovarian germ cell tumors. Because of its rarity, diagnosis and management of the tumor has not been clearly defined. A 52-year-old female with follicular variant of papillary carcinoma arising in struma ovarii is presented. There was no evidence of clinical malignancy or metastases. However on the basis of histopathologic findings, the case was diagnosed as malignant struma ovarii. It was accepted as stage Ia tumor and no other treatment was considered after radical ex… Show more

“…Struma ovarii is a monodermal variant of ovarian teratoma characterized predominantly (>50%) of thyroid tissue in the ovary [2][3][4], which was initially described by Bottlin in 1888 and, later, by Pick in 1902 and 1903, who recognized that struma ovarii was composed of thyroid tissue [6].…”

“…Struma ovarii is a rare and highly specialized form of mature teratoma constituting 5% of all teratomas [2]. To be classified as a struma ovarii, teratoma must be composed predominantly of mature thyroid tissue (>50%) [2][3][4]. 5%-10% of these tumours are malignant, with papillary carcinoma and follicular carcinoma being the most common [5].…”

“…Le diagnostic histologique des formes malignes du goitre ovarien a longtemps été controversé et mal évalué en raison de l'absence de critères diagnostiques uniformes et de la rareté de la tumeur [19]. Initialement, les critères de malignité retenus dans les études plus anciennes étaient ceux des autres néopla-sies ovariennes : atypies cellulaires, invasion vasculaire et pré-sence de métastases [7].…”

“…These tumors are composed by epithelial tissue and can include hair, skin, teeth, bone [2], and other tissues, and approximately 15% contain thyroid tissue [3]. To classify a teratoma as struma ovarii, it must contain thyroid tissue greater than 50% [4].…”
