“…Zinc levels in human hair had been the subject of several reports [3,23,28,35,42,46] and comments [8,22,53] since the first documentation of low levels of zinc in hair of humans who were zinc deficient [48]; the potential advantages of this tissue as an index of the nutritional status of zinc have been re-emphasized recently [53], together with some of the problems in interpretation. The possible contribution of the external environment to zinc in hair content after adequate sample washing procedures has been controversial [2,22,35,53].…”

“…The use of scalp hair has the advantage of non -invasiveness, ease of collection, preservation (needing no refrigeration) and transport (including air mail postage to distant specialised laboratories), ease of samples once the correct reagent is used, and lack of matrix effect when standard solutions are also prepared in the solubilising fluid (19). Besides, zinc hair determination does not suffer from haemolysis, as happens in serum zinc determinations.…”

“…The disadvantage of using hair zinc has been attributed to its contamination with greasy products that are normally applied to head hair, and the care that is needed in sampling hair samples. Hair samples must be taken nearer the scalp to reflect the true chronic status of zinc and must be washed repeatedly with different types of solvents to get rid of all possible contaminants (19). These precautions were taken in the present work.…”

“…Scalp hair has been increasingly used as a bio-monitor for many elements, both toxic and essential, towards assessing environmental exposures and body nutritional status, as well as diagnosis of diseases (Hammer et al, 1971;Flynn et al, 1971;Krishna et al, 1987;Klevay et al, 1987;Ohmori et al, 1989;Ahmed et al, 1990;Wang et al, 1990;Ashraf et al, 1995a;MacPherson and Basco, 2000;Hintz, 2001). Hair trace metal analysis has many advantages over the more conventional kinds of biological matrices such as blood and urine, primarily because of the ease of sample collection, transport and storage.…”
