Mammals from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide a checklist of flying and non-flying mammal species which occur in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, delimiting species by vegetation domains and vulnerability. Records were based on specimens in museums, literature, and only eventually on photos (by camera traps). There are 151 mammal species reported or collected in the state, comprising 10 orders and 29 families. The richest orders were Chiroptera (61 spp.), Rodentia (35), Carnivora (18), and Didelphimorphia (16). The rich… Show more

“…The large number of captures and the cumulative curve of species captured (Figure 2), throughout a relatively long period of time dedicated to survey (1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007), indicate that overall species richness was well sampled and that this is a reliable representation of bat diversity in the focal region. In addition, five species found here -Diphylla ecaudata, Mimon bennettii, Trachops cirrhosus, Uroderma magnirostrum, and Molossus pretiosus -were still not reported for Mato Grosso do Sul (Cáceres et al, 2008), increasing to 66 the number of bat species registered in this state.…”

“…In Brazil, efforts were made to produce state check-lists using such data (e.g., Vivo, 1998;Cherem et al, 2004;Cáceres et al, 2008;Vivo et al, 2011;Silva et al, 2013), which often also deal with conservational status of each species at some Brazilian states (e.g., Machado, A.B.M. et al, 1998;Bergallo et al, 2000;Marques et al, 2002;Mikich & Bérnils, 2004;Bressan et al, 2009).…”

“…The state of Mato Grosso do Sul (17° to 24°S, 51° to 58°W) encompass about 4.2% of the Brazilian territory (Cáceres et al, 2008). The state is considered by some authors a transitional area due the presence of at least three major biomes: Cerrado in the center and northeastern regions, Atlantic Forest in the southern and eastern regions and Pantanal in the northwestern region (Cáceres et al, 2008).…”
