Cannabinoids are important chemotaxonomic markers unique to Cannabis. Previous studies show that a plant's dry-weight ratio of Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to cannabidiol (CBD) can be assigned to one of three chemotypes and that alleles B(D) and B(T) encode alloenzymes that catalyze the conversion of cannabigerol to CBD and THC, respectively. In the present study, the frequencies of B(D) and B(T) in sample populations of 157 Cannabis accessions were determined from CBD and THC banding patterns, visualized by starch gel electrophoresis. Gas chromatography was used to quantify cannabinoid levels in 96 of the same accessions. The data were interpreted with respect to previous analyses of genetic and morphological variation in the same germplasm collection. Two biotypes (infraspecific taxa of unassigned rank) of C. sativa and four biotypes of C. indica were recognized. Mean THC levels and the frequency of B(T) were significantly higher in C. indica than C. sativa. The proportion of high THC/CBD chemotype plants in most accessions assigned to C. sativa was <25% and in most accessions assigned to C. indica was >25%. Plants with relatively high levels of tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) and/or cannabidivarin (CBDV) were common only in C. indica. This study supports a two-species concept of Cannabis.

The literature on the sexual side effects of drugs and chemicals has been reviewed. There are many substances which alter the human sociosexual response cycle either negatively, positively or both. Many of the drugs used therapeutically have been reported to have adverse effects on sexuality, and this must be taken into account when these drugs are used clinically. Many substances which are used for recreational purposes (or sometimes abused) also have profound effects on sexual response. Many of these substances are used in such a way that they can correct underlying sexual problems. Treatment of a drug abuser may well prove unsuccessful without consideration of preexistent sociosexual problems and concerns. From the dawn of recorded history, many substances have been used for the purpose of sexual enhancement. Some of these have known success and their reputations have been passed down through the millenia. The chapter has not yet been closed on aphrodisiacs, even though none have survived the rigors of scientific scrutiny. As long as humans place value on optimal sexual functioning, there will be a demand for sex-enhancing drugs. In order for the scientific and medical community to successfully meet these challenges, more effective and relevant study designs will have to be utilized in order to separate fact from fancy. The study of pharmacosexology is in its infancy, and in order for it to grow and contribute to the world body of knowledge, more researchers and clinicians must be trained in both pharmacology and sexology.

Trichomes of Cannabis sativa are the main tissue for synthesizing and storing cannabinoids, the most interesting compounds in this plant. In this report, metabolic changes in the trichomes of C. sativa var. bedrobinol were investigated by 1H-NMR-based metabolomics over the flowering session. Three cannabinoids, including Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabichromenic acid (CBCA), and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), were successfully identified in the chloroform extracts of the Cannabis trichomes. Meanwhile, 20 non-cannabinoid compounds, including sugars, amino acids, and other acidic constituents, were detected in the water extracts. Metabolic changes of the Cannabis trichomes during the monitoring time were successfully revealed using the models of partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) and 1H-NMR quantitative analysis. Score plots of the PLSDA models classified metabolomes based on the harvest time. Discriminant metabolites for the differentiation were detected in the loading plots of the models. THCA was found as an important discriminant compound in the chloroform extracts, while all quantified water-soluble compounds were detected, contributing to the metabolic changes of the water extracts. The obtained results shed more light on the biosynthesis of metabolites in the Cannabis trichomes over the flowering season.
