Managing aggression in global amnesia following herpes simplex virus encephalitis: The case of E.B.

Abstract: Although several prior case studies have described outcome following acute onset of HSVE, this case presents a unique challenge for rehabilitation in several respects. First, EB's pre-morbid history is complicated; in contrast with prior HSVE case studies that have typically involved individuals with a relatively high level of pre-morbid functioning, EB presents with limited educational attainment and a prior history of several incarcerations for violent offenses. “…Antiviral drugs are classified as virucidals, immunomodulators and antiviral chemotherapeutic agents. Treatment of HSV infections is currently based on the use of several selective and effective drugs such as acyclovir, penciclovir, famciclovir, cidofovir, valacyclovir, trifluridine and vidarabine, which act as inhibitors of DNA polymerase [14,15]. Nevertheless, the intensive use of these drugs in the therapy has led to undesirable effects such as drug‐resistant strains [16].…”

“…The main classes of antiviral drugs can be classified as virucidal, immunomodulatory, and antiviral chemotherapeutic agents. There are several selective and effective drugs such as acyclovir, penciclovir, famciclovir, cidofovir, valacyclovir, trifluridine, and vidarabine, which act as inhibitors of viral DNA synthesis [43,44]. Unfortunately, the intensive use of these drugs in therapy has led to undesirable effects such as drug-resistant strains [45].…”
