“…Risk assessment for suicide and homicide should go hand in hand. Any report of suicidal ideation should be carefully explored using current guidelines (e.g., Joiner et al, 1999; Kleespies et al, 1999; Rudd, Joiner, Jobes, & King, 1999; VandeCreek & Knapp, 1999), but this should be followed by an assessment of violence risk, also using recently developed guidelines (Otto, 2000; Thienhaus & Piasecki, 1998; Tishler et al, 2000). Conversely, any report of homicidal or other violent ideation should be investigated thoroughly and followed by an assessment of suicidal risk.…”

“…In addition, some of the distinct aspects of the therapeutic approaches for each may have to be combined. For instance, depression is common among individuals who are violent (Hillbrand, Foster, & Hirt, 1988) but is not a frequently mentioned treatment target in this population (Otto, 2000; Tishler et al, 2000). Similarly, problems managing anger are common among individuals who are suicidal (Goldsmith et al, 1990), who may profit from anger management training.…”

“…The Society of Clinical Psychology identified education and training in behavioral emergencies as crucial (APA, 2000). Updated information on assessing and managing client violence has been offered in recent journal publications (Otto, 2000; Tishler, Gordon, & Landry-Meyer, 2000) as well as books (Caraulia & Steiger, 1997; Kleespies, 1998; Newhill, 2003). Unfortunately, results from this study indicate that this information is not being integrated into training programs.…”

“…There were, however, no correlations with the psychiatrist's work experience (Flannery, Stone, Rego, & Walker, 2001). As a result, training programmes on how to manage violent patients have been put into place for care staff (Dubin et al, 1988) and specific strategies for the management of aggressive behaviour have been used for precautionary measures when necessary as a quick and efficient way of dealing with violent or potentially violent patients (Tishler, Gordon, & Landry Meyer, 2000). These initiatives have been shown to reduce the risk of violent recurrences in patients (Weisman & Lamberti, 2002) and have relieved the need to commit said patients to intensive psychiatric care departments (Swanson et al, 2000).…”
