Mandibular molar with three distal root canals

Abstract: An unusual case is presented in which there were three canals in the distal root of a mandibular first permanent molar. The anomaly was not detectable radiographically, but could be important during root canal treatment. The variation may be related to the occurrence of a contralateral three‐rooted molar seen in the patient.

“…A detailed comparison of the results obtained in the present study with previous reports can be found in Tables 1 and 2. In the present study, there was neither a significant difference according to sex (p ϭ 0.981), which is similar to a recent report (5), nor the side of occurrence (left vs right side, p ϭ 0.953). However, other studies reported that three-rooted mandibular first molars occurred more frequently on the right side than on the left side (5,22,23), whereas there are also studies showing that these teeth occurred more frequently on the left side (3,24). These contradictory findings may be explained by marked differences in the sample size and in the methods used.…”

“…[1112] The larger mesio distal dimension of the single distal root, compared to that of the single mesial root, may account for the rare incidence of the third canal created by dentine apposition in a single distal root. [106063] Other possible reasons for the presence of extra root canals include role of external factors during odontogenesis, penetrance of an atavistic gene and more importantly racial genetic factors.
